Also known as; Austria Hungary, Austro Hungarian Monarchy, and the Dual Monarchy
Formed when Austria, which had ruled Hungary since the late 17th Century agreed to Hungarian demands for autonomy by dividing their empire between the two countries each with their own ruler
Had twin capitals in Vienna and Budapest
Dissolved at the end of WWI with the countries of Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia being formed from it with significant parts going to Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia.
Why Austro-Hungarian Empire might be annoying
It was a monarchy.
It was ruled by the Hapsburg family.
It annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1908, and when a Serb freedom fighter from Bosnia-Herzegovina assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand (next in line to the Austrian throne), WWI was ignited.
The countries of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia which were formed whole or partly from it after WWI all engaged in violent civil wars after the fall of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.
Why Austro-Hungarian Empire might not be annoying
It was formed peacefully and ruled for the most part benignly.
It had a great cultural and intellectual life; Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, and Arnold Schoenberg all lived under it.
It had little in the way of the open organized antisemitism of the rest of Europe of the time.
It allowed its people to keep their own languages, customs, and local laws.
Its dissolution led to the end of the Hapsburg dynasty.
It lasted barely fifty years.
