    Appeared in the films ‘The Mask of Dimitrios’ (1944), ‘The Southerner’ (1945), ‘Mildred Pierce’ (1945), ‘The Unfaithful’ (1947), ‘Ruthless’ (1948), ‘Flamingo Road’ (1949), ‘Born to Be Bad’ (1950), ‘Wings of Danger’ (1952), ‘The Treasure of Ruby Hills’ (1955), ‘The Young One’ (1960), and ‘It’s Only Money’ (1962)

Why he might be annoying:

    He originally planned to be a doctor like his father until he dropped out of the University of Texas at 19.
    He was arrested in Hawaii for public intoxication; at the time of the arrest, he was dancing a hula outside a bar (1961).
    He died broke.

Why he might not be annoying:

    While working in regional theater in Austin, he was seen by Alfred Lunt, who recommended him to New York’s Theater Guild.
    He almost drowned during a rafting expedition in Topanga Canyon when the raft he was riding on capsized and he hit his head on a rock, losing consciousness. Fellow actor John Emery rescued him and brought him to shore (1950).
    He was arrested in Louisiana for violating state segregation laws by drinking in a blacks-only bar (1951). He testified in court that he had been invited in by two black soldiers and was proud to drink with servicemen regardless of their color.
    The oldest continuously operated theater in Texas was renamed after him (1968).
