U.S. Congressman
    (April 4, 1927-June 20, 2003)
Birth name is Robert Lee Stump
Representative in the Arizona House of Representatives (1959-1967)
Senator in the Arizona State Senate (1967-1976)
President of the Arizona State Senate (1975-1976)
    Democratic Representative from Arizona (1977-1983)
    Republican Representative from Arizona (1983-2003)
Chairman of the Armed Services Committee (2001-2003)
    Seventh Day Adventist
He ran as a Democrat for the House in 1976, but his voting record would be very conservative.
He voted against allowing religious clubs in schools the same treatment as other clubs in schools (1984).
He had a terrible civil rights record, even being one of only twelve representatives to vote against applying civil rights laws to the House of Representatives (1988).
He announced the death of Bob Hope on the House floor, but it turned out to be based on a false report (1997).
Ironically, Stump would die a month before Bob Hope.
He did not often travel from Washington D.C. back to Arizona.
Although he represented the 3rd district, there were reports that his real residence was outside the 3rd district.
He served in the navy during World War II.
He was a cotton and grain farmer before becoming a politician.
He voted for Ronald Reagan's tax cuts in 1981.
He changed party affiliation to Republican in January 1983, fitting his conservatism.
He treated his constituents well, often answering the phone at his congressional office himself.
He was a major advocate of immigration reform.
He was an advocate for more funds for veterans and the armed forces.
He died of a rare blood disorder a few months after his retirement.
