Why he might be annoying:

He added an 'e' to his last name to copy Sam Cooke.
    He was divorced twice.
His first wife (Anna Gordy) was 17 years older than him.
He married his second wife (Janis Hunter) when he was 33 and she was 16.
He beat both of his wifes.
Because he missed alimony payments to his first wife, he had to give all royalties from his 1978 album, 'Here, My Dear' to her.
He once tried to have his second son kidnapped.
He was very addicted to cocaine.
While touring in the 80s, he frequently quit live shows due to stage fright and paranoia.
He said he was a bigger sex symbol than Elvis.
He never got along with his father, which most likely resulted in his death.
He gave his father the gun he was shot with as a present 4 months before his death.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had one of the sexiest voices in music.
His legendary 1971 album, 'What's Going On,' was almost never released because he wrote all the songs and it dealt with social issues.
'What's Going On' was a huge success and allowed more Motown artists to have artistic control over their work.
Even though he battled through great personal issues, he still always managed to come back, like in 1982 with his surprise hit 'Sexual Healing.'
After he divorced Janis Hunter in 1982, he moved in with his parents to get his life back together.
He was shot by his father the day before his 45th birthday.
