    (September 11, 1943- )
    Born in Quebec, Canada
Advocate for the independence of Quebec from Canada
Founding member of the Front de Liberation du Quebec (FLQ; 1963)
Lived in exile in Cuba, Algeria and France (1967-84)
Founded the Mouvement de Liberation Nationale du Quebec (MLNQ; 1996)
He served less than four years in prison for planting a bomb at an army recruitment center that killed a 65-year-old night watchman.
When English-speaking parts of Quebec suggested that if Quebec left Canada then they would split off from Quebec, he said, 'We will never accept partition, so you can bet there will be a bloodbath.'
He denounced Montreal's Jewish population for its opposition to Quebecois secession, saying 'Nationalists will remember who was against them.'
He said, 'Molotov cocktails are wonderful, extraordinary instruments.'
He urged Quebecois to 'get their shotguns' to deal with their enemies, specifically mentioning Brent Tyler, a lawyer who frequently challenged Quebec's French-language laws.
After the death of Pierre Trudeau, he said, 'I don't know if we'll go and spit on his tomb, but it's good to get rid of an enemy like that.'
The mainstream secessionist Parti Quebecois dissociated themselves from him.
He decided to avoid a confrontation with residents of Shawville, a town where provincial laws requiring French language signs are often ignored, and agreed to meet the mayor on neutral ground instead (2000).
He said, 'As long as a peaceful avenue is open to us, then violence is unnecessary.'
