    Born in Cincinnati, Ohio
    Republican Senator from Ohio (elected 2010)
    Represented Ohio's second Congressional district in the House of Representatives (May 1993-May 2005)
    Served in the Bush administration as U.S. Trade Representative and Director of the Office of Management and Budget

Why he might be annoying:

    Ohio's large labor constituency criticized his support for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
    He's regarded as being somewhat bipartisan, but, his voting record suggests he's solidly conservative.
    He's a lawyer by trade.
    He dislocated his shoulder after his kayak overturned, so he banged his shoulder into a rock to pop it back into place (Mel Gibson in 'Lethal Weapon 2' was his inspiration).
    Political analysts thought Mitt Romney would select him as his running mate, hoping Portman could deliver rich-in-electoral-votes Ohio.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He earned his J.D. from University of Michigan Law School, and, did his undergrad work at Dartmouth.
    Of the seven Congressional elections he won, he never received less than 70% of the popular vote.
    One of his major legislative accomplishments was reforming the I.R.S.
    He speaks Spanish fluently.
    He reportedly kayaked the entire Rio Grande River.
