Clown
    (April 3, 1928-July 22, 2012)
    Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota
    Birth name was Chris Wedes
    'J.P.' stood for Julius Pierpont
Hosted 'The J.P. Patches Show' on KIRO-TV in Seattle (1958-81)
The J.P. Patches character was originally created by Daryl Laub for WTCN-TV in St. Paul, Minnesota.
When Laub left the station, Wedes was reluctant to take over the character because he disliked the time-consuming make-up sessions.
He claimed to be Mayor of the City Dump, inspiring quite a few kids to beg their parents to take them to the real landfill to look for J.P.'s wacky shack.
During a live commercial for Hi-C, he nearly spit out the juice because a prankster had spiked it with vodka.
The same jokes and pratfalls were repeated endlessly on the show.
He hosted one of the longest-running local kiddie programs.
At its peak, his program had a viewership of over 100,000.
The show was live and unscripted, requiring considerable improv skills.
Sonics guard Slick Watts said, 'In most big cities, the famous people are the sports stars, but in Seattle, J.P. was the man.'
He frequently visited Seattle Children's Hospital and appeared at fundraisers for local charities.
When the crowd waiting for a Soundgarden concert began trashing the theater, he came out of the wings in costume and calmed down the audience (1992).
Seattle erected a statue of him to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his show (2008).
