    (November 5, 1919-July 23, 2006)
    Born in Roslyn, South Dakota
Accordionist on 'The Lawrence Welk Show' (1950-82)
Signature song was 'Lady of Spain'
Regular performer at the Welk Resort and Champagne Theatre in Branson, Missouri
Inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame (1990)
He said that growing up, he honed his playing technique by milking the cows on the family farm.
He majored in English instead of music because he could not afford the college's $25 per semester piano rental fee.
He was nicknamed 'the happy Norwegian.'
He recorded a 'Disco Polka' album. (The horror... the horror...)
During WWII, he joined the USO and entertained the troops in Europe.
He was married to Berdyne Koerner for 60 years until his death.
Welk asked him to sit in on one number and the audience response was so enthusiastic that Welk immediately hired him full-time (1950).
He also served as the band's backup conductor, stage manager and road manager, leading Welk to call him 'my right-hand man for over thirty years.'
He continued performing until shortly before his death, saying 'I might be getting older, but when I am on stage and see the folks in the audience, and hear the band, I’m 18 again, and I have even more fun than the audience.'
