    Born in Barmbek, Hamurg, Germany

You know that Wayne Newton song, 'Danke Schoen'? You can thank Bert for that.
Some call him 'the father of easy listening' music.
Several of the songs he composed were bigger hits for other artists than they were for him.
Details about his life during World War II are sketchy; all that's known is that he was a bandsman for the German Navy and he was interned in Denmark.
He was a prolific composer, bandleader and recording artist.
He was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (1993).
    He played numerous instruments.
As for The Beatles, he did select them to be the backup band for a Tony Sheridan recording session.
According to the Barenaked Ladies mega hit 'One Week,' he had the 'mad hits.'
